source: ligaindonesia.co.id
So, there you have it. The whole 220 matches of the 2014 Indonesia Super League (ISL) have been played. From February 1st to September 5th, there were 597 goals scored (avg. 2.7 goals/ match). Within the same time range, there were 95 penalties have been awarded by the referees. Which means in every 2 matches, there were at least 1 penalty being awarded. Surprised? I'm not.

Here's the full list of the penalties this season
next sheets contain tabulations of the list

Unsurprisingly, penalties for the visiting team are fewer than those for the home team. 66 penalties (38 in West, 28 in East) were being awarded to the host, while the visitors only got 29 (15 in West, 14 in East).

Among the 76 successfully-converted penalties, 19 of them had high decisiveness level towards the result of each matches. Whether to obtain 3 points or to secure a draw. Simply put, there were 22 penalties being awarded in the 3rd 15-minute interval of the second half (from the 76th minute up to 90th++ minute). 18 of them were converted into goals, and 10 of them changed the end-result of each matches. The best example would be Nasser Al Sebai's spot kick for Putra Samarinda against PSM.

Several notes from the record:
  • All 22 contestants of the 2014 ISL have won at least a penalty. Persebaya won more than any other teams with 8 penalties (6 success, 2 failed). Persik and Semen Padang came second with 7 penalties each. On the other hand, Mitra Kukar and Persijap only got 1 penalty the whole season.
  • Persijap had given away more penalties than any other teams. They were being punished 13 times the whole season. 2 other relegated teams, Persita and Persiba (BTL) came second with 8 penalties given against each of them. Persebaya, on the other hand, not only that they got more penalties, they also hold the record of 0 penalty given against them!

Ahmad Suparman, lost his job after a controversial
penalty decision towards Persiba (BPN)

Sometimes, penalty award is based on a controversial decision by the referee. This season, cases on the subject have also occurred on several occasions. The most memorable ones could be the one given to Persipura against Persiba (BPN) by referee Ahmad Suparman. Following many questionable decisions prior to, the West Javanese pointed to Persiba’s penalty spot on the 90th minute over a controversial reason. Stating “hand ball” while replay showed no hands touched no ball. A call that lately cost him his refereeing career.

Another evident example on the subject is the one involving Vladimir Vujovic (Persib) against the host and zone-leader Arema. Referee Suyanto awarded Arema a penalty following a blatant dive by Sukadana.
